Summary

The activity is about tiling the plane with the tile known as the ‘versatile’ and other similar tiles. There are infinitely many ways to achieve this. Some of them are called periodic and other are called aperiodic. Two kind of tiles are used in the exercise.

Learning objectives

Improve the geometric comprehension and work with angles.

Teacher preparation

The teacher must at least be familiar with tiles and some configurations of the tiles.

Teacher explanation

The teacher introduces the two tiles and explain some relations regarding their geometry (angles). The teacher explains the difference between a periodic tiling and an aperiodic tiling with other tiles like triangles or squares or with copies of the tiles here used.

Student activity/Steps

  1. Explore the possibilities to tile the entire plane.
  2. Take notes and draw the progress made in a notebook.
